PACOIMA SINGERS FEATURED ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE SUNDAY DAILY NEWS, MAY 30, 2010

'A magical world' of music at Pacoima Middle School

By Connie Llanos, Staff Writer

PACOIMA — The blaring car horns, neglected alleys and towering freeway columns that surround Pacoima Middle School are nothing to sing about.

But in Classroom 75, tucked away in a back corner of this gritty campus, students are singing ... and dancing and twirling. In fact, they're grooving all the way to Canada for an international music competition this week.

Last update: March 18, 2012

The Pacoima Singers are an award-winning. multi-ethnic performing arts group at the Pacoima Middle School Television, Theatre & Performing Arts Magnet in the San Fernando Valley.   This singing and dancing group, consisting of 30 seventh and eighth graders, comes from all over Los Angeles.  The group, age 12 to 14, has already earned an excellent reputation performing for many dignitaries, including former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Jumping on stage

The group regularly performs around the city for important community events, such as the 2006 National M.A.D.D. Conference and in 2001 was named the Official Choir for the State of California at the national Festival of the States in Washington, D.C.

...and that's not all folks

The students also record CDs to raise money for special community service projects. An original song about 9/11 entitled “One Small Flame” raised over $3,000 for the Red Cross relief efforts. A second CD, “Faces in the Mirror,” provided funds for the homeless in Los Angeles. Their new CD, “Peace is Patriotic/Winning the Fight,” was released to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

ABOUT OUR PERFORMING ARTS MAGNET

Our school is one of the longest-running magnets in Los Angeles. There are five award-winning production classes: Dance, Drama, Musical Theatre, TV/Film and Stage Design. In addition, the students traditionally have some of the highest test scores in the Valley as a result of their full academic program. The magnet runs not only a Gifted program, but also offers high school level courses in Algebra and Geometry.

For more information, or to schedule a tour of the magnet, contact Michael Fishler, Magnet Coordinator, at (818) 686-4200.

Please mark these dates down on your calendar because you don't want to miss out on the fun! We have active parents who are working hard to make these events possible. If you care to lend a hand for any of the events, don't be shy, join in!
